The School: John Perryn Primary

John Perryn Primary School, located in Ealing, is one of Enabling Enterprise’s partner schools and has been working with us for the past 3 years. Through a range of Lesson-Time projects and Challenge Days, students across the whole school have been developing their enterprise skills. Today was another excellent opportunity for 30 Year 4 students to put their challenge skills to the test and learn about the construction industry with Lendlease in Stratford’s International Quarter.

The Business: Lendlease, London

With over 55 years’ experience, Lendlease is a leading international property and construction company with operations in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. They are currently working on numerous projects including the redevelopment of Queen Elizabeth’s Olympic Park, creating four million sq ft of Grade ‘A’ office accommodation, 333 new residential units and associated community facilities.

The Challenge: Terrific Towers

After coming up with imaginative team names for their construction firms, students were taken on a tour of the building. Back in their teams, they met their volunteers for the day and asked them about their roles within Lendlease, and how they use the Enabling Enterprise challenge skills in their everyday work. The day’s challenge involved students Working in a Team to design and create a model for a brand new tower block. Taking inspiration from London’s skyline and from Sharing Ideas with each other, teams used newspaper, sticky tape, scissors and glue to create mini models of their buildings.

The Results:

Year 4 from John Perryn made tremendous progress throughout the day in terms of becoming better at Working in a Team. For example, groups who found the decision-making process a bit tricky in the morning when they were tasked with coming up with a team name were making quick team decisions about their building’s construction by the end of the day. The teams were taken on a fantastic tour of the building and also got to visit the upper floors’ decking area where they had a view across the construction site at The International Quarter, Stratford. Volunteers commented on the quality of the students’ questions and their professional behaviour throughout the offices.

What they said:

  • “It’s been a great day where they’ve really got to apply the things we have been learning back in school and also get to learn about potential jobs to explore in the future” – Teacher, John Perryn Primary
  • “It’s such a shame that I could only be here for the afternoon but next time I will definitely come and work with the students all day- I feel inspired by them and their passion for this type of learning, I wish I’d had access to something similar when I was their age.” – Volunteer, Lendlease
  • “We have got to see that when you take different ideas from different people that you can combine them to come up with something even better than what you had to start with” – Student, John Perryn Primary

Thanks to Lendlease for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from John Perryn Primary for coming along.
