The School: Pelham Primary School

Pelham Primary School, located in the London Borough of Merton, have been working with Enabling Enterprise since September 2014. Students are already familiar with the eight enterprise skills, having used them in lesson-time projects during their Autumn Enterprise Week, as well as during their Crime Scene Challenge Day in January. Today, 30 students from Year 3 were given the opportunity to further develop their enterprise skills and put them to use in the world of work.

The Business: Aon, London

Aon is a global professional services firm that advises clients on the topics of risk and people. The company is a provider of risk management, insurance and reinsurance brokerage, human resource solutions and outsourcing services. It employs 65,000 people in 500 offices in more than 120 countries and has its headquarters in London. Until 2014 Aon was the principal partner and global shirt sponsor of the Premier League team Manchester United F.C.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

The students from Pelham were set the challenge of becoming investment managers for the day, as they learnt about key terms such as risk, benefit, and return. Teams worked together to answer questions in the style of ‘The Million Pound Drop’ and had to use their Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to practise taking risks with their money.
After an informative tour of the Aon offices, students then worked together with the expert volunteers from Aon to decide how they would invest the life savings of their fictional clients, Mr and Mrs Green. Students had to decide between three different companies in which to invest, and had to Work in a Team to decide how they would make the highest return on their investments.

The Results:

After deciding how to invest their clients’ savings, the students found out how their investments had got on after a year had passed, and as a result of their excellent teamwork skills, every team made a sizeable return on their investments. The volunteers and adults from EE were not only impressed with how well students worked as a team, but also with how well they were Using Imagination to come up with creative ways to share their results with the rest of the class.

What they said:

  • “The volunteers were friendly and engaging and spoke really well to the children. Today was a great experience for the students and they seem to have really enjoyed the day!” – Teacher, Pelham Primary School
  • “Before the day I didn’t quite know what to expect, but it’s been brilliant to share my job with the students and to see them work as a team throughout the day – I’ve loved it!” – Volunteer, Aon
  • “We worked really well in a team because we all had our own ideas but listened to each other and combined different ideas.” – Student, Pelham Primary School

Thanks to Aon for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from Pelham Primary School for coming along.
