The Schools: Gilbertstone Primary School and Audley Primary School

Gilbertstone Primary School, situated in Yardley, Birmingham have an aspiration to always aim high so have been working with Enabling Enterprise for 2 years. Year 5 students joined us today for the Airport visit. Audley Primary School, based in Stechford have been working with Enabling Enterprise for 3 years. One of their values is ‘Our children’s achievements in all aspects of life are celebrated and they are taught to aspire to be the very best learners, workers and members of society’ which fits the challenge skills at Enabling Enterprise. The Year 4 students who buddied up with Gilbertstone were well equipped to face today’s challenge at BIA, having completed the ‘Future Transport‘ Challenge Day as a whole school recently.

The Business: Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham Airport offers both domestic flights within the UK, and international flights to destinations in Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, North America and the Caribbean. The Flight School offers a unique and exciting learning environment where the airport runways and associated activities can be viewed.

The Challenge: High Fliers

Students were quickly placed in groups with new faces and were set the challenge of rebranding a failing airline. Each group used their imaginations and worked effectively to consider their target market and used Problem Solving to help re-brand ‘Ageing Airways’.

The Results:

Students wowed the airport’s judge, Andy, who was impressed with the original ideas and branding. The level of teamwork was so high that by the end of the day, you would never have known that the mixed teams had only been working together for the first time!

What they said:

  • “A wonderful, well-organised day with a purposeful challenge.” – Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School
  • “I was impressed how students helped each other to become a really effective team.” – Volunteer, Birmingham International Airport
  • “I think that today was amazing and it was so much fun!” – Student, Audley Primary School

Thanks to Birmingham International Airport for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 and 5 from Audley Primary School and Gilbertstone Primary School for coming along.
