The School: Summerfield Primary School

Summerfield Primary School in Winson Green, Birmingham are committed to providing an interesting and varied curriculum and therefore have enjoyed a very successful year working with Enabling Enterprise. Their engaged and hard-working students are used to Aiming High and Staying Positive and so were super excited to undertake their Challenge Day.

The Challenge: Future Transport

Today Years 1 – 6 were set the challenge of designing and building a brand new form of transport fit for the 31st century! They had to Work in Teams to Solve the Problems caused by the harsh environments that existed in the future world. How would they cross a desert with sand so sharp it would tear rubber? How would they protect people crossing a sea with metal eating sharks? Once they had decided on their form of transport they needed to plan it carefully then use their Leadership skills in order to share out all the jobs and bring their craft to life.

The Results:

The pupils rose to the challenge wonderfully and were eager to share their ideas with one another in order to design the most Imaginative form of transport they could. They proved they could Listen Carefully by combining all their ideas to come up with some amazing and creative designs. The atmosphere around the school was electric as the pupils put their Team Work skills into action and began building their planes, trains and automobiles. Their teachers were impressed with how well they Stayed Positive in the face of plans that needed to be refined and a looming deadline. Determined to be the best each team Aimed High and gave it their all in the hope of being judged the best when their classmates put their prototype to the test.

What they said:

  • “The structure of the day encouraged them to solve problems for themselves” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “I enjoyed working in a team and we got better at solving problems and listening to each other “. – Student, Year 4

Well done to everyone who was involved.
