The School: Beechwood Primary School

Beechwood Primary, in Luton are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. They have been developing all eight of the enterprise skills through Lesson-Time Projects such as ‘Number Crunching’ where year 4 children were designing their very own brand of chocolate bars and ‘Community Café’ in year 2, where students created and ran their own cafes. For this challenge years 1 to 4 were set the task of becoming detectives and participating in the Crime Scene Investigation Challenge.

The Challenge: Crime Scene Investigation

A terrible crime had been committed in school: all the chocolate had been taken! With four suspects under investigation, would the students be able to solve the case before the trail went cold? Students used their Listening Carefully and Problem Solving skills to uncover evidence, before Sharing Ideas within their teams to make sure they had enough evidence to reach a verdict.

The Results:

After a full day of investigating, analysing evidence and visiting the crime scene to understand the case all students in years 1 to 4 confidently presented their reports to the case officer. Teams effectively used their problem solving skills to link the evidence, finger prints and CCTV footage to develop strong cases for who they believed was the Sugar Snatcher. As teams were maturely reflecting on their progress in all eight of the enterprise skills, a shock revelation was broadcast later that week: one of the suspects made a confession. The case is now closed.

What they said:

  • “Activities like these today are great for teaching pupils to develop these important skills ” – Teacher, Year 4
  • ” We are the best team, because we can show really good teamwork and also think about how to fix a problem .” – Student, Year 3
  • ” Like real police officers, we have to help each other catch the Sugar Snatcher because it’s not easy to do it on your own.”- Student, Year 2

Well done to everyone who was involved.
