The Schools: Willow Brook Primary School and Winns Primary

The Winns Primary School and Willow Brook Primary School are both located in Waltham Forest and have both been working with Enabling Enterprise over the last academic year. Today 15 Year 6 students from Willow Brook Primary collaborated with 20 Year 4 students from Winns Primary to build upon the fantastic enterprise learning both sets of students have been carrying out at school. Both groups have experience putting their enterprise skills to the test as part of a Challenge Day in school, however, this trip provided an excellent opportunity for the students to gain an insight into the world of banking and finance.

The Business: J.P. Morgan, London

J.P. Morgan is one of the oldest financial institutions in the United States, with a history dating back over 200 years. They are a leading global financial services firm with assets of $2.4 trillion and operate in more than 60 countries. They have 260,000 employees who serve millions of consumers, small businesses and many of the world’s most prominent corporate, institutional and government clients. Although head quartered in New York City, J.P. Morgan has a large presence in the United Kingdom, with offices in London, Bournemouth, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Today, volunteers from a wide range of roles within the organisation supported groups of students throughout their challenges and a whole new set of volunteers joined students for the overall judging in the afternoon.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

After professionally introducing themselves to their volunteers, students took the opportunity to interview them about their roles at J.P. Morgan and the way in which they employ challenge skills into their everyday work. Meeting the volunteers gave the students a chance to learn a little bit more about investments and risk assessments before the teams took on the roles of wealth managers for their clients. Once they had conducted crucial research into their clients and the possible investment choices, teams had to make important decisions about where to invest their clients’ retirement fund. A year passed, after which the teams were able to calculate the return on their investments and present their investment choices to a group of judges.

The Results:

The inspirational tour around the J.P. Morgan offices (including a visit to the 31st floor!) provided a chance the students to see employees Listening Carefully to each other and Working in a Team in a real-life office environment. Although the teams were focusing on developing their own skills surrounding Listening Carefully, through note taking, and Working in a Team, by supporting one another to make decisions, it was clear that students developed a range of skills. Aside from their increased knowledge of key financial terms including investment, risk, profit and return, students demonstrated tremendous progress over the course of the day in terms of how confident they were Sharing Ideas, both in teams and to the rest of the group in their final presentations.

What they said:

  • “They have got on really well today working with students they don’t normally work with and those form another school, it’s a great opportunity for them to develop the skills they are familiar with from lessons” – Teacher, Willow Brook Primary School
  • “I wasn’t expecting them to be so young! We have had older students come before but I was really pleasantly surprised by how confident these young people are and how much they have grasped about investment management in such a short period of time” – Volunteer, J.P. Morgan
  • “Today we have been solving a lot of problems because had to make decisions about lots of things as a group and we didn’t always agree but we worked it out together” – Student, Winns Primary

Thanks to J.P. Morgan for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 and 6 from Willow Brook Primary School and Winns Primary for coming along.
