The School: Southgate Primary School

Located in Crawley, West Sussex, Southgate Primary have been expertly developing their students’ enterprise skills through a range of Lesson-Time Projects, whole-school Challenge Days and business trips to top employers. Today a selection of Year 3, 4 and 5 students came together to apply their set of skills in the world of work and stretch themselves on a challenge that would put their teamwork to the test.

The Business: Gowling WLG, London

Gowling WLG is a Global 100 legal practice, with over 1,400 legal professionals and a range of dedicated business support teams across 18 cities in the UK, Canada, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Today volunteers Natalie, Rod, Tosin, Hilary, Kam and Sam were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs find out more about law, then run the mock trials at Hogwarts School.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

The students were set the challenge of representing Harry Potter characters at trial, where teams took on the role of prosecution or defence in order to argue their case. To do this, the students needed to apply Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to the highest standard as they researched their cases. The volunteers from Gowling WLG were able to share their expertise with their team of students, which meant the aspiring paralegals and lawyers managed to build very strong cases for or against the accused.

The Results:

Students really impressed both the Gowling WLG volunteers and their teachers as the would-be barristers rose to the challenge ‘in court’. The day culminated with three memorable trials where all six teams presented their side of the case confidently and persuasively, before the jury announced their verdicts. In one of the trials, both sides of the argument were so convincing we ended up with a hung jury! Southgate students walked away from the challenge with pride, having stretched their skills beyond what they had ever imagined.

What they said:

  • “It was a well-organised day with excellent volunteers who supported the children well. The children had a fantastic opportunity to present their ideas to the group and to listen to both sides of the argument.” – Teacher, Southgate Primary
  • “I was very impressed with all of the children and the entire event was well organised.” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “Can’t think of any suggestions for improvement!” – Volunteer, Gowling WLG
  • “After today I feel I have a made a big improvement in Working in a Team, Staying Positive, Using Imagination, Problem Solving and Sharing Ideas.” – Year 5 Student, Southgate Primary

Thanks to Gowling WLG for such a great trip day, and to Years 4 and 5 from Southgate Primary School for coming along.
