The School: Montpelier Primary School

From the Borough of Ealing, Montpelier Primary have been expertly developing their students’ enterprise skills through business trips to employers, Lesson-Time projects in their classrooms and a couple of Challenge Days the whole school still remembers vividly. After Year 4 set the bar very high yesterday in terms of Working in a Team and Using Imagination on their EE trip at London Business School, it was time for the whole school to join forces on a stretching challenge set by the United Nations.

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

Planet Earth is getting overcrowded, so in this challenge, students were tasked with starting a new society on ‘Utopia’: a moon in a galaxy far, far away. Their Problem Solving skills were put to the test as they had to come up with the best plan for their moonbase. To do this well, they had to take on various roles through the day, from designers to managers, to builders and advertisers. Using their teammates’ strengths in Leading and Staying Positive, project developments got underway during the construction of 3D maps.

The Results:

It was fantastic to observe how the different teams in all classes approached today’s challenges. A wide range of ingenious hybrid animals were designed to help the new human population on Utopia, and the Montpelier students’ city planning was testament to their shrewd group decisions.

What they said:

  • “In my class there is a group of children who normally don’t work well together, especially with two of them having challenging behaviour sometimes; but today they are all contributing so I’m really pleased to see that!” – Teacher, Year 4
  • “This type of project gives them independence, which is very good to prepare them for high school.” – Teacher, Year 6
  • “We were taking turns at being in charge because we knew all of us were good at something so we made sure we used our strengths for this challenge.” – Student, Year 3
  • “Everyone is loving it – if we could do this every day it would be so easy!” – Support Staff, Montpelier Primary

Well done to everyone who was involved.
