The Schools: Gayhurst Community School, St John and St James CoE Primary School and Oasis Academy Skinner Street

Taking part in today’s activities were 29 Year 5 students from Oasis Academy Skinner Street in Gillingham, who have been developing enterprise skills within the classroom over the course of this academic year. Also visiting the business today were St John & St James Primary School in Enfield, who are in their 3rd year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Today, 9 of their Year 3 students were joined by 10 students from Gayhurst Primary School in Hackney. Working in a Team with students who are from a different year and school created an exciting environment for this group.

The Business: Lendlease, London

With over 55 years’ experience, Lendlease is a leading international property, construction and infrastructure company. They have a headquarters in Sydney, Australia and operations in over 40 countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas. From funding a project through to development and construction, they create state of the art buildings and infrastructure, including hospitals, roads and bridges. Lendlease has recently been recognised for having a commitment to sustainable practices in retail and office developments. This was very evident today when students were taken on a tour which included a visit to the rooftop garden complete with an insect wall. Students were supported throughout the day by dedicated volunteers from various sectors of the company including quantity surveyors, tax managers and civil engineers.

The Challenge: Terrific Towers

Today’s challenge tasked students with designing and creating models for their own ‘Terrific Tower’. After learning about how to introduce themselves in a professional environment, students had the opportunity to meet their volunteers and interview them. Asking questions about what their job role entailed and how they incorporate enterprise skills into their work, the time spent with the volunteers is invaluable in encouraging ambition. Taking inspiration from existing architecture across the London skyline, students get down to Sharing Ideas about their design before finalising their project outline. Construction begins after lunch and, finally, judges determine an overall winning team for the day.

The Results:

During the inspirational tour of the offices at Lendlease, students were Listening Carefully when they were invited into an exclusive meeting in which architects and designers were Sharing Ideas on a current project in the hopes of winning a bid. They also learnt about the importance of plants in an office environment and how, at Lendlease, there are 8 plants for every employee! By the end of the day’s activities, there was an array of creative tower designs and impressive construction techniques. Overall, it was great to see all the students effectively Working in a Team and applying the enterprise learning they have undertaken in school.

What they said:

  • “Today has certainly developed high aspirations and encouraged an attitude of looking to future about what they could end up doing; it’s given them the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t normally get to do.” – Teacher, Gayhurst Primary
  • “For many of us and many of the students, this has been a brand new experience and I have loved it! I’ve been amazed at how they have implemented these skills to get the tasks done.” – Volunteer, Lendlease
  • “That was so intense! When the time was running out and we hadn’t finished building the tower we had to all work together and I was chanting so we kept going to the last minute!” – Student, Oasis Academy

Thanks to Lendlease for such a great trip day, and to Gayhurst Community School, St John and St James CoE Primary School and Oasis Academy Skinner Street for coming along.
