The School: St Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School

From the borough of Southwark, St Mary Magdalene are in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Whilst the whole school stills remembers the fantastic Greetings Cards Challenge they completed a few weeks ago, the students have also explored the all-important enterprise skills through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and business trips to top employers. Today a selection of Year 3 and Year 5 students were under the spotlight as they travelled to the heart of the City to put their Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to the test in the world of work.

The Business: Deloitte, London

Deloitte is a leading provider of professional services including audit, tax, corporate finance consulting and technology. They have over 225,000 employees and work in over 150 countries across the world. Today a range of professionals from the company gave up some of their time to support the mixed teams of budding entrepreneurs in a stretching challenge involving risk and benefit.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

Students were enthusiastic about taking on the role of investment managers for the day. In their mixed teams they learnt to take calculated risk on behalf their client Daisy, who entrusted them with £20,000 of her life savings. After practising risk-taking in a game of ‘Million Pound Drop’, the students then had to analyse three different company profiles, with tough team decisions that stretched their Working in a Team skills.

The Results:

The children impressed all adults in the room as they confidently applied new concepts alongside their maths skills during this challenge. Help from the Deloitte volunteers played a huge part in the success of the day, as they supported the teams with their priceless top tips. The teams of would-be investment managers worked within tight deadlines but were able to confidently report to Daisy at the end of the day as they all had aimed high to make the big return on her behalf. The day culminated with a round of well-deserved Skill awards as the adults in the room had nothing but praise for the enterprising investors.

What they said:

  • “I think this is a brilliant experience for them. For these children this is as good as it gets. The way they’ve been using the skills throughout the challenge, especially Problem Solving, was impressive. I am also impressed with some children who had difficulty writing but were actually able to relay the information to their group. And also one child who at first didn’t want to join in is now sharing ideas with their group. It was really good to see them all engaged, all on task, all interacting.” – Teacher, St Mary Magdalene
  • “The day was engaging and rewarding.” – Volunteer, Deloitte
  • “A great opportunity for all parties” – Volunteer, Deloitte
  • “Good interactive session on a very valid skill set required for all age groups” – Volunteer, Deloitte
  • “The format of the sessions was excellent and extremely inclusive for the children.” – Volunteer, Deloitte
  • “The programme was great and gave the children lots of opportunities to make a decision and justify their choices.” – Volunteer, Deloitte
  • “I enjoyed seeing them bond as a team and help each other. I’m very proud!” – Volunteer, Deloitte
