The School: Wormholt Park Primary School

From the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, Wormholt Park Primary have been developing their students’ enterprise skills for the second year running through a range of Lesson-Time Projects and whole-school Challenge Days, as well as business trips to employers from a variety of sectors. Today Year 6s were in the spotlight as they were keen to stretch the enterprise skills they had been practising in their ‘Legal Eagles’ project back at school.

The Business: Freshfields, London

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is a leader among international law firms, providing business law advice of the highest quality throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US. Today volunteers Charlotte and Lisa were on hand to help the budding entrepreneurs find out more about law, then run the mock trials at Hogwarts School.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

The students were set the challenge of representing Harry Potter characters at trial, where teams took on the role of prosecution
or defence in order to argue their case. To do this, the students needed to apply Problem Solving and Listening Carefully skills to the highest standard as they researched their cases. But they were not competing alone: joining them throughout the day were a team of expert volunteers from Freshfields, who supported students on each case.

The Results:

Students really impressed both the Freshfields volunteers and their teachers as they rose to the challenge. The day culminated with three memorable trials where all six teams ‘in court’ presented their side of the case confidently and persuasively, before the jury announced their verdict. At the end of the challenge, all adults in the room were full of praise for the budding entrepreneurs.

What they said:

  • “I am extremely grateful for the value that this trip to today’s workplace has added to our project. For our students to have interacted with professionals from the industry is especially important in terms of their aspirations and their future careers.” – Teacher, Wormholt Park Primary
  • “Some of your presentations were robust and really convincing! I also liked how you used good questioning and challenged how the other team used the evidence.” – Volunteer, Freshfields
  • “It was interesting to see the change in a couple of teams where students who were perhaps a bit shy at the beginning, gained confidence over the course of the day and came forward a lot more, and conversely, strong leaders got better at listening to their team mates by the end of the challenge.” – Volunteer, Worshipful Company of World Traders
  • “I want to become a barrister one day.” – Student, Wormholt Park Primary

Thanks to Freshfields for such a great trip day, and to Year 6 from Wormholt Park Primary for coming along.
