The School: President Kennedy School

A select group of Year 9 students and school staff from President Kennedy School travelled from their base in Coventry to Birmingham under the impression that the day was to be all about planes…they got more than they bargained for on this Enabling Enterprise employer visit!

The Business: Monarch Aircraft Engineering

Monarch Aircraft Engineering is an award-winning independent aircraft maintenance provider. Like cars, planes need regular maintenance and testing and the service Monarch provide can be likened to an MOT for planes from all fleets as well as privately owned jets.

The Challenge: High Fliers

The High Fliers day did indeed focus on aircraft – specifically an airline that needed some creative help to become more profitable. This aspect of the challenge appealed to the imaginative, problem solvers in the group – quick to rebrand the failing airline to appeal to their selected target audience. The opportunity to meet employees at Monarch and work alongside them on the fast paced tasks really meant working outside of their comfort zone – could they meet and greet new people? Communicate clearly, confidently and share their creative ideas to work together to tight deadlines? The answer was – most definitely!

The Results:

Once initial nerves had been cast aside, the group asked questions, listened intently to share thoughts and feelings about jobs and skills, both now and in the future. Lead enthusiastically by the Monarch team the group were able to tour the hanger and see mechanics and engineers at work as well as being granted permission to board a plane and view the cockpit. It wasn’t all planes though…a demonstration by Birmingham Airport Fire Officers and a close encounter with the fire truck’s equipment and then an opportunity to meet and find out about the work of a Boarder Force Officer and her dog rounded off the day brilliantly.

What they said:

  • “I’ve learned I could get an apprenticeship here and train to be a mechanic. That’s what I now want to do! I’m going to go and do some research later.” – Student, Monarch Aircraft Engineering
  • “I have been so impressed by the ‘can do’ attitude today. They have used their enterprise skills so well. A really memorable day giving the group ideas for future careers.” – Teacher, President Kennedy School
  • “I have really enjoyed working with the group and hopefully inspiring them for the future.” – Volunteer, Monarch Aircraft Engineering

Thanks to Monarch Aircraft Engineering for such a great trip day, and to President Kennedy School students and staff for your enthusiasm throughout the day.
