The Schools: St Ursula’s Convent School

St Ursula’s convent school in Greenwich are into their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Year 7-10 students have previously taken part in ‘A Day in Politics’ challenge where students worked in teams to set up their own political parties. This year, Years 7-9 kick-started their enterprise programme with “Business in a Day” where they set up their own souvenir companies.

The Business: DLA Piper, London

DLA Piper is a global law firm with lawyers located in more than 30 countries throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. It helps companies with their legal needs anywhere in the world. They pride themselves on delivery quality and value to their clients.

The Challenge: Listen up Lawyers

Students from St Ursula’s convent school used their problem solving skills to act as either the prosecution or defence in cases based on real life incidences. Students had to meticulously analyse pieces of evidence and communicate effectively to share ideas on how to develop strong compelling arguments to support their case. They received assistance the volunteers at DLA Piper, who were able to act a legal experts, giving them exceptional advice and support as the students built their cases.

The Results :

Teams worked effectively during the allotted time to bring their best arguments to trial. Students took turns to present parts of their cases, presenting compelling evidence and examining witnesses. All the teams presented strong arguments which made it difficult for the jury to come to a unanimous verdict. The volunteers and the teachers had nothing but praise for the students and how well they listened to each other carefully and worked effectively as teams.

What they said:

  • “They really enjoyed it, they get so much out of days like this, it’s brilliant” – Teacher, St Ursulas’s Convent School

  • ” The session was very interactive. I especially love how we had volunteers who were trainee lawyers, this made me feel like we were preparing a real case” – Student, St Ursula’s

Thanks to DLA Piper for such a great trip day, and to Years 8, 9 and 10 from St Ursula’s Convent School for coming along.
