The School: Curwen Primary School

Located near Plaistow in the London Borough of Newham, Curwen Primary are a long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise. With an array of Lesson-Time Projects that teachers and students have successfully completed in class, a range of business trips that all year groups have taken part in, and a memorable Big Sell-Off last December, it was no surprise that today’s Year 3s set the bar high in the world of work today.

The Business: Societe Generale, London

Societe Generale is one of the largest European financial services groups. Today the Curwen students had the opportunity to meet and work with a range of Societe Generale volunteers from different sections of the business, including HR and Marketing. Adult experts Ling, Jay, Gabby, Michaela, Gunnar and Darryl were on hand to help the enthusiastic young entrepreneurs hone in on Listening Carefully and Working in a Team. Let’s see how they got on…

The Challenge: Invest for Success

In teams, Curwen students were set the challenge to become investment managers for the day. As they learnt more about the world of finance, they focused on the risks and benefits of investing, and practised this in a game of ‘The Million Pound Drop’. The students were then asked to make investments on behalf of their clients, Mr and Mrs Green. They were required to analyse the risks and ethics around certain investments and present their choices as investment managers.

The Results:

The children impressed all adults in the room as they confidently applied new concepts alongside their maths skills during this challenge. Help from the Societe Generale volunteers played a huge part in the success of the day, as they supported the teams with their priceless top tips. The teams of would-be investment managers worked within tight deadlines but managed to deliver a round of extremely professional presentations in front the volunteers, now sitting in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style panel of judges. Their clients’ representatives, along with the school adults and EE staff in the room, were spoilt for choice when it came to praising how well the teams did.

What they said:

  • “The entire day was absolutely fantastic. I think the students gained a lot from meeting with people who actually work in the field of investment.” – Teacher, Curwen Primary
  • “You found a great way of simplifying complex notions: it was interactive and playful. I feel energised after this session!” – Volunteer, Societe Generale
  • “Today I enjoyed taking risks in my team. And I also enjoyed doing our presentation, speaking to the judges.” – Student, Curwen Primary
  • “We used decision-making, note-taking, problem-solving: it was a lot of fun!” – Student, Curwen Primary

Thanks to Societe Generale for such a great trip day, and to Year 3 from Curwen Primary School for coming along.
