The School: Benthal Primary School

Benthal Primary School in Hackney is in their third year as an Enabling Enterprise partner school. The students for the day were the Year 4 to 6 members of their school council, chosen to discover more about how people can use technology to campaign for change on a large scale. Building on what they’d learnt during their whole-school ‘Day in Politics’ challenge day, this was another chance to stretch their collaborative working, creativity and listening skills.

The Business:, London is a global online platform. On, people everywhere are starting campaigns, mobilising supporters, and working with decision makers to drive solutions. More than 100 million people in 196 countries are using Hosting their first Enabling Enterprise visit, we were lucky to be joined for the day by a group of fantastic volunteers from a range of different roles from across the organisation, including operations, HR and campaigns, as well as a visit from the director of the UK office.

The Challenge: Spread the Word

The first part of the day involved teams of students researching what does. They interviewed the volunteers about their jobs, learnt new words and concepts including ‘online platform’ and ‘social change’ and had a great tour of the offices to meet the campaign team to find out about recent petitions. The teams then had to pick something in school they’d like to change before planning their campaign. This included deciding on a catchy message, as well as designing an exciting new mascot and preparing and presenting a news broadcast to spread the message far and wide.

The Results:

The students were quick to grasp the idea that using an online petition, along with an effective supporting campaign, could be a great way to achieve a ‘social change’. As active members of their school council, they certainly had plenty of ideas and suggestions of what they’d like to see changed and were keen to ask lots of insightful questions to find out more. Teams were quick to apply the advice from the campaign team when writing their catchy message headlines. For example, one team made sure to use imperative verbs to increase their efficacy, with the message: ‘Don’t conform, no uniform. Be unique, it’s individuality we seek’. Volunteers were also impressed with the creativity students brought to their mascot designs. Finally, the event culminated with an impressive round of engaging presentations of their ‘news report’ to share their hard work from the day.

What they said:

  • “Today was a great opportunity for the children to work collaboratively in mixed age groups, make decisions and solve problems; it was inspiring and very empowering for them.” – Teacher, Benthal Primary School
  • “It was great to see the progression as the students gained confidence throughout the day. We were particularly impressed with how sophisticated their ideas were and how quickly they learnt and immediately applied that new understanding.” – Volunteer,
  • “Our team were particularly good at problem solving, for example when two people wanted two different options, we combined them to make something even better.” – Student, Benthal Primary School

Thanks to for such a great trip day, and to Benthal Primary School for coming along.
