The Schools: Brookland Juniors and Lavender Primary

Two North London schools joined forces for a challenge in the financial heart of the City: Year 5 from Lavender Primary, Enfield, and Year 6 from Brookland Juniors, Barnet. Both schools have been working with Enabling Enterprise through a range of business trips, Challenge Days and Lesson-Time Projects to develop their students’ enterprise skills. So it was no surprise that the students were keen to show off entrepreneurship in the world of work.

The Business: UBS – Liverpool Street

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they serve ‘ultra high net worth individuals’ all over the world. Today Tasheika, Jack, Jack, Elinor, Omar and Andrey were on hand to help the eager 9- to 11-year olds hone in on Working in a Team and Listening Carefully. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

Over the course of the day, pupils had the chance to meet a range of volunteers from across the company, and find out about the wide variety of jobs at UBS, from Asset Management to Customer Care and relations, to Catering & Facilities. They were even treated to interacting with some of the technology from the AV team. The aim for the day was for students to further develop their communication and teamwork skills. To do this, they became investment companies and were given £20,000 by their clients Mr and Mrs Green to invest in three different companies. In order to select how to invest their money, students had to weigh up the risks and benefits of each company they were presented with.

The Results:

After Listening Carefully to find out as much information as possible about their clients, the aspiring investment managers had to use their Problem Solving skills to aim for the biggest possible return on their investment. Many children decided to spread the possible risks by investing some of their money across different companies, while others made high risk decisions and invested the full £20,000 in one company. Once the success of each company had been revealed and the investment bankers reflected on their choices, they shared the outcomes with the UBS judges in a series of professional presentations.

What they said:

  • “The volunteers were WONDERFUL. They really added authenticity to the session.” – Teacher, Brookland Juniors
  • “The day ran smoothly. It was great to see the smiles on their faces all day, enjoying themselves and learning a lot. It was particularly good to see those who were shy at the beginning become more confident by the end of the day.” – Volunteer, UBS
  • “Today we have been excellent at Leading because whenever someone was feeling shy or unsure about our team decision, I made sure they were happy with what we decided as a team.” – Student, Lavender Primary

Thanks to UBS for such a great trip day, and to Years 5 and 6 from Lavender Primary and Brookland Juniors for coming along.
