The School: Southgate Primary School

Southgate Primary School in West Sussex are an Enabling Enterprise partner school, with students across the school developing their enterprise skills through Lesson-Time Projects, whole-school Challenge Days and trips to businesses. In Year 4, students have already run a campaign across the school promoting reading and more recently have been designing a new brand of chocolate. That is on top of the whole school designing a new colony for a distant moon later in the year!

The Business: Norton Rose Fulbright, London

Norton Rose Fulbright delivers legal services to international corporates, financial institutions, governments and other public sector organisations. They cover a range of legal practices, including corporate, M&A and securities, banking and finance, dispute resolution and litigation, tax, employment and labour and regulation. They also have a world-leading Islamic finance practice alongside offices across the world in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Volunteers from across the business worked with students throughout the day to share their experiences of working in a top law firm. Students asked lots of questions to find out how the volunteers use enterprise skills in their day-to-day jobs.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

Students worked in teams and used their problem solving skills to act as either the prosecution or defence for some of their favourite storybook characters. This task required the students to analyse multiple pieces of evidence and to listen carefully to each other’s ideas in order to decide what the best arguments were and which pieces of evidence were most relevant to back up their case. They were assisted throughout by volunteers from Norton Rose Fulbright, who acted as expert consultants to the budding lawyers.

The Results:

Teams aimed high to bring the best cases to trial. Presenting their case in court, both defence and prosecution proved they had built strong arguments, making the task trickier than ever for the jury to come to a unanimous verdict. It is fair to say the adults in the room had nothing but praise for the students’ speaking and listening skills as well as their teamwork.

What they said:

  • “This is such a brilliant opportunity for them, they wouldn’t normally have the chance to have an experience like this!” – Teacher, Southgate Primary
  • “They made real progress, with quieter children coming out of their shells.” – Volunteer, Norton Rose Fulbright
  • “We used persuasive language and it worked: the jury voted for us!” – Student, Southgate Primary

Thanks to Norton Rose Fulbright for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from Southgate Primary for coming along.
