The Schools: Southern Road and Benthal Primary Schools

Newham-based Year 6 students from Southern Road Primary joined forces with Years 5 and 6 from Benthal Primary in Hackney as they all travelled to the heart of the city for a stretching challenge in the world of work. Both schools have recently completed the Challenge Day ‘Operation Moonbase’ in school, and with several years’ experience of developing their enterprise skills through a range of Challenge Days, Lesson-Time Projects and business trips, it was no surprise that the bar was set high today in this prestigious law firm.

The Business: Dentons, London

Dentons is a multinational law firm and the world’s largest law firm by number of lawyers. Dentons have consistently been recognized by the business and legal communities for exceptional client service and as leaders in law and business solutions working across the world. Today a range of volunteers from across the business were on hand to help the aspiring lawyers hone in on their Listening Carefully and Problem Solving skills.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

The students took on the role of paralegals and solicitors and had to work as a team in order act as either the prosecution or defence in a case involving some of their favourite storybook characters. This task required the students to analyse multiple pieces of evidence and to listen carefully to each other’s ideas in order to decide the best arguments to present to the Jury in court and which pieces of evidence were most relevant to back up their case.

The Results:

Towards the end of the day the teams tried out being barristers and presented their cases during the fictional trials, showing how they had worked together to solve the problems each case had thrown up along the way. Every team demonstrated how, by using their imaginations, they were able to come to innovative conclusions. This, of course, put the jury in a difficult position to come up with a verdict, given how passionately all the students spoke. One thing was certain: all the adults in the room had nothing but praise for the enterprising young lawyers.

What they said:

  • “Excellent staff from Dentons who really worked well with the pupils: they were open, friendly and professional.” – Teacher, Southern Road Primary School
  • “It was quite exciting to see the quieter children come out of their shells over the course of the day. Also, I like how the skills you teach are completely in line with our own framework here.” – Volunteer, Dentons
  • “I entreat you not to be fooled by the Defence: Harry Potter is guilty and we have the evidence to prove it!” – Student, Benthal Primary School

Thanks to Dentons for such a great trip day, and to Years 5 and 6 from Southern Road and Benthal Primary Schools for coming along.
