The School: East Acton Primary School

Students in Year 5 at East Acton Primary School have been saving a failing games company in a Lesson-Time Project designed to improve their enterprise skills. Later this year they will be joining the rest of the school to design a new society for a distant moon in their Challenge Day. Practising their skills with professionals from Hounslow Highways will stand them in good stead for the rest of their year.

The Business: Hounslow Highways, London

Hounslow Highways is the highways service provider working on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow. They are responsible for maintaining the roads, pavements and street lighting across the borough, as well as providing a number of other key services including street cleaning, winter maintenance and enforcement.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

Students were set the exciting task of designing a brand new gadget for the Hounslow Highways employees in order to make their lives easier. They dived straight into some crucial market research from the employees to find out which gadgets they currently enjoy using. To do this well, the children needed to work together, listen carefully and makes notes from the information they collected from the Hounslow Highways volunteers and the exciting tour round a working depot. Bursting with enthusiasm, the inventors were soon ready to design their gadget, factoring in its appearance, size and special features.

The Results:

Teams aimed high to generate a range of innovative gadgets, including street cleaning vehicles and X-ray glasses (to see pipe blockages). As the volunteers turned into judges, the teams of inventors took on the role of advertising aces in a bid to convince the adults that their gadget was the most imaginative and the most useful. The Trade Fair was thriving with exciting ideas and confident pitches. At the end of the day, students had placed the bar so high it was hard for our judges to pick a winning team.

What they said:

  • “It has been such a great day, the children have really enjoyed it and I’m going to be rearranging my groups back at school as I have seen students working so well with people I didn’t think they would!” – Teacher, East Acton
  • “I had a really nice day, it was great to work with the children, they are so much more imaginative than me!” – Volunteer, Hounslow Highways
  • “I want to work here, it’s so much fun and people are so friendly.” – Student, East Acton

Thanks to Hounslow Highways for such a great trip day, and to Year 4 from East Acton Primary for coming along.
