The School: Matchborough First School Academy

Matchborough First School in Redditch, Worcestershire, with the school motto ‘Aim High and Smile’, have worked with Enabling Enterprise over the last twelve months and approached this new Challenge Day with great enthusiasm, eager to use their ever developing skills.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

The Enabling Enterprise Day in Politics challenge was the perfect chance for the Matchborough students from Year 1 to 4 to learn more about the life of a politician and how to run a political party. Each class got started by testing their knowledge with a quiz and were introduced to some rather challenging political vocabulary. Teams had to listen carefully to each other, share ideas and make big decisions! Manifestos were then devised, before each political party made vibrant party stash and competed in their very own hustings to elect class winners.

The Results:

The students were clearly engaged and relished the opportunity to take ownership, articulate their opinions and listen to the views of others. Teams impressed with the way in which problems were overcome and agreements made – there was certainly some mature and sensitive leadership, and it was inspiring to see this happening at the very moment when PMQs were trending on social media. Secret class ballots were held to decide the final winners and it is safe to say that everyone went home tired after a busy day!

What they said:

  • “This is totally engaging. The way in which the children are solving problems and having to persevere to work in their team is just great.” – Teacher, Matchborough First School
  • “I enjoyed sharing my idea that the voting age should be lowered because the decisions in real politics affect us children too!” – Student, Matchborough First School
  • “I feel really proud of myself and my team. We have never worked together before but I think we have really tried hard to share our ideas and encourage each other. It’s been lots of fun. – Student, Matchborough First School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
