The School: Winns Primary School

Winns Primary is an Enabling Enterprise partner school in Waltham Forest. Year 5 students have been working on their enterprise skills in several Lesson-Time Projects as well as a double Challenge Day where Key Stage 2 on their Operation Moonbase set up a brand new civilisation on a distant moon. Today’s trip was an opportunity for 20 students from across the year group to put all of these skills to the test inside a top UK business.

The Business: Lloyds Banking Group, London

Lloyds Bank has millions of customers in the UK, and a presence in nearly every community. The bank helps businesses and individuals, while making a positive contribution to the communities in which it operates. Lloyds is currently celebrating its 250-year anniversary.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

After an introduction to Lloyds Banking Group, students got to grips with the concept of financial risk by playing a fast-paced quiz game inspired by ‘The Million Pound Drop’. They worked together with their teammates to decide how big a risk they were willing to take with their money.

Students then took on the roles of Investment Managers, researching their clients and companies they could invest their clients’ money in. They worked with the volunteers from Lloyds to make some tough decisions about which investments would make the biggest return using both their comprehension and literacy skills.

The Results:

Having carefully considered their investment decisions and the risks involved, students were delighted to see that their hard work has paid off and yielded a sizeable return for their clients. Teams were ready present their successes to the judging panel in a series of formal presentations.

Volunteers from LLoyds were impressed by the students’ Sharing Ideas and Working in a Team skills. Students also demonstrated great Listening Carefully skills by taking notes on the important information they heard throughout the day.

What they said:

  • “Thanks to everyone at Lloyds and Enabling Enterprise. We’ve had a great day today and are very proud of our students ” – Teacher, Winns Primary School
  • “It’s been a great day – I was impressed with how students coped with the advanced concepts in today’s challenge and it was great to see how enthusiastic they were.” – Volunteer, Lloyds
  • “The best part of today was presenting our work to the judges. The hardest part was deciding what companies we could choose.” – Student, Winns Primary School

Thanks to Lloyds Banking Group for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Winns Primary School for coming along.
