The School: Friern Barnet School

Friern Barnet are a long-standing partner of Enabling Enterprise in their fourth year of developing their students’ enterprise skills. Just like in the school’s motto ‘Enjoy and Excel’, winning teams from their challenge day earlier in the year were again in the spotlight today. These Year 9 students were set the challenge of applying these skills in the real world of work that would stretch their teamwork as well their Presenting skills beyond what they had ever imagined.

The Business: M&G, London

M&G is a leading investment manager in the UK and overseas, working in offices across Europe and Asia to ensure that their clients make the most of their money. Volunteers from different departments joined students throughout the day to support them with their challenge and students had the opportunity to see how the enterprise skills they have been developing in school are used by people working at M&G.

The Challenge: Sweet Success

After getting to know their new team and the M&G volunteers, the budding young entrepreneurs had to learn about financial risk before applying this in their challenge to create a new sweet shop. With the requirement to think of their target audience and a unique selling point (USP), their creative and thoughtful ideas were shared and tricky decisions made using excellent problem solving techniques.

The Results:

Students did fantastically well working within tight deadlines, undoubtedly, guidance and advice from the M&G volunteers played a huge part in the success of the day. Applying what they’d learnt from interviewing the employees and asking insightful questions during the tour, the students were able to demonstrate great understanding of investments and financial literacy as they made their team decisions. Finally, they worked hard to effectively to present persuasive pitches in front of an audience of over 30 people, including staff from many different sectors across M&G.

What they said:

  • “The staff from M&G were great: really patient, supportive and informative. Their support when they watched the presentations made the students feel very important.” – Teacher, Friern Barnet
  • “We were incredibly impressed with how articulate your presentations were, in particular, your eye contact was fantastic.” – Volunteer judge, M&G
  • “I learnt about the benefits of letting other team members speak first and listening to their ideas before sharing mine.” – Student, Friern Barnet

Thanks to M&G for such a great trip day, and to Year 9 from Friern Barnet School for coming along.
