The School: Dairy Meadow Primary School

Dairy Meadow is a 2-form entry Primary School in Ealing and this is their first year of running an Enabling Enterprise programme. Dairy Meadow has a real focus on empowering their students to be confident and resilient and so this links perfectly to students developing their enterprise skills. Students have been working on Lesson-Time Projects, Challenge Days as well as business trips for some of them. Today was the chance for 30 Year 5 students to enter the world of work at Oliver Wyman.

The Business: Oliver Wyman

Oliver Wyman is an international management consulting company, helping businesses to solve their biggest challenges. Most recently, this has included the re-branding of Starbucks and McDonalds. Over the course of the Challenge Day, students will get a chance to meet a range of volunteers from across the company, and work with them to improve their teamwork and communication skills on a consultancy challenge.

The Challenge: United Jetways Management Consultants

The children were set the challenge of creating a marketing campaign for United Jetways in order to improve the finances of the struggling airline. They first identified target audiences from families to professionals to students. From this moment on it was clear that we were working with teams of creative consultants as their ideas to drum up sales included play areas including a ball pit, with childcare provided, Wi-Fi access for all and half-price tickets for children under 10. Management Consultants new and old were clear that above all to solve problems of existing companies, the key was to ask lots of questions so as to really target their markets and those teams targeting professionals soon realised that their target audience were sat right next to them!

The Results:

The day culminated in presentations to the CEO of United Jetways to see who had met the brief successfully, and the children not only demonstrated fantastic creativity, but also team work and maturity in delivering their presentations.

What they said:

  • “They’ve taken on the challenge with great enthusiasm.” – Teacher, Dairy Meadow Primary
  • “Their presentations were very informative and engaging, I was really impressed!” – Volunteer, Oliver Wyman
  • “We enjoyed being professionals for the day and working in a team.” – Student, Dairy Meadow Primary School

Thanks to Oliver Wyman for such a great trip day, and to Year 5 from Dairy Meadow Primary for coming along.
