The Schools: Darrick Wood Junior School and Wendell Park Primary School

Students at Darrick Wood Juniors’, Bromley, may be in their first year of developing their enterprise skills, but their Greetings Card challenge last term already set the bar high in terms of teamwork. For this challenge, a range of Years 3 to 6 students teamed up with fellow would-be entrepreneurs from Wendell Park’s Year 5, who have very recently practised their Problem Solving skills in their Crime Scene challenge. Both schools today travelled to a perfect location for stretching these skills even further in this one-of-a-kind high-tech challenge.

The Business: IBM, London

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, which now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems. A wide range of IBM volunteers were on hand today to help our budding entrepreneurs hone in on Problem Solving and Using Imagination. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: imaginative Inventors

The mixed teams of students dived straight into their challenge of inventing innovative gadgets that would help IBM staff in their everyday work. Students were able to conduct some useful market research to help them generate ideas for their new gadgets. They did this successfully by quizzing the IBM volunteers in depth, listening carefully to find out what problems they had before embarking on a very informative tour of the IBM offices, where they had the chance to see first-hand some of the amazing technology IBM have created to help solve the problems of their own customers.

The Results:

Working within very tight deadlines, students unleashed their creativity and stretched their teamwork to the highest standard. All teams worked against the clock and made sure they agreed on special features for their invention. They designed an informative poster about their gadget, were able to add finishing touches and rehearsed to deliver the most persuasive presentations, selling their gadgets in an exciting Inventors’ Fair.

The day culminated with extremely positive feedback from the IBM volunteers now turned into judges, who were most impressed with all the skills students had developed over the course of the day, especially their teamwork and their creativity.

What they said:

  • “It’s such a good opportunity for our students to come in and see a business like this, it’s really aspirational and shows them what they can aim for.” – Teacher, Darrick Wood
  • “You really notice how the children’s confidence grows across the time they are here and how much they enjoy it.” – Volunteer, IBM
  • ” At first, it was difficult working with people from another school, but now we’ve put all our ideas together and we are a really good team!” – Student, Wendell Park

Thanks to IBM for such a great trip day, and to Years 3 to 6 from Darrick Wood Junior School and Year 5 from Wendell Park Primary School for coming along.
