On the afternoon of the 31st of May – the first official day of the summer half term, ten young people from PHASCA, a Haringey Youth Group, attended a presentation day at Societe Generale. The overarching aim of the day was to generate a business idea which participants would then be able to develop.

The afternoon began with a mixed bag of warm up games which included “ducking” and “zapping” to get the group focused. Team skills were also put to the test with the shark game which involved crossing the shark infested river using a single piece of paper. The level of team spirit was evident with individual members making several return journeys for deserted members before getting their entire team to the other side.

The core part of the day involved brainstorming business ideas and then whittling these down to the most practical. At this point the group were introduced to the idea of “pitching” their ideas by thinking about the why, what and how. The participants also took part in exercises which focused on the elements of a good and bad presentation by mimicking body language in each of these. The exercise acted as a useful reminder of the things not to do when standing up in front of a room full of people.

In the final presentation the teams pitched two distinct ideas, one of a customising business and the other, an electronic guide for new mums. The judges were torn between the two ideas, so much so that they couldn’t bring themselves to choose a winner. A big thank you to the Societe Generale volunteers for acting as judges and for imparting such great advice.
