The School: Bridge Academy

Students in Year 8 at Bridge Academy in Hackney have been working together in teams to design and build the fastest racing car as part of their Enabling Enterprise lesson time project. The winning teams from each class were chosen to come and further practise their enterprise skills on a visit to Crossrail.

The Business: Crossrail, London

Crossrail is among the most significant infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the UK. From improving journey times across London, to easing congestion and offering better connections, Crossrail is changing the way people travel around the capital. Crossrail will deliver a high frequency, high capacity service to 37 stations linking Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via 21 km of new twin-bore tunnels under central London. It will bring an additional 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London’s key business districts.

The Challenge: Terrific Towers

The students split into teams and were joined by volunteers from Crossrail, then they were set their challenge for the day. Each team would have to design and build the tallest tower they could, on budget and to deadline. The students would only be able to solve the problems that engineering projects encounter by working together in their teams.

The Results:

By the end of the day every team had a tower standing and were able to present back to a panel of judges from Crossrail on the teamwork and decision making processes that they had used in construction. It was great to see every student share their ideas so confidently in the presentation and use persuasive techniques and delivery strategies to win over the judges.

What they said:

  • “When the tower was falling down we used teamwork to keep it standing.” – Student, Bridge Academy
  • “It was a really fun day, very cool. I’d definitely like to come again.” – Volunteer, Crossrail
  • “It’s not really about the best design, it’s all about the teamwork that goes into it that really counts.” – Student, Bridge Academy

Thanks to Crossrail for such a great trip day, and to Year 8 from Bridge Academy for coming along.
