The School: Grendon Junior and Infant School

Students in Years 1 and 2 at Grendon Junior and Infant School in Birmingham were keen and eager to get started on their Enterprise Challenge Day recently and will have further enterprise opportunities when they set up a café and create an art gallery later this year. Elsewhere around the school, students are developing their enterprise skills by recycling materials into new toys and Year 6 impressed on a recent visit to Morgan Motors.

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

The 6 and 7 year olds, working in small teams were set their challenge for the day – to design the perfect civilisation of the future. They focused on teamwork throughout, as well as using their imagination to design the capital city. Great fun was had when using clay to design and make a new species of animal that would provide countless benefits to the new society. The positivity and resilience shown as problems were solved was most impressive from such a young group of entrepreneurs!

The Results:

At the end of the day each team had the opportunity to showcase their Moonbase ideas in an ‘Interglactic Space Fair’ – Year 1 reported back to Year 6 and it was fantastic to hear the younger students confidently sharing their ideas whilst the older students encouraged the younger students to reflect on their skills. Year 2 proudly presented their 3D models and one boy declared, ‘This is much better than my PS4!’.

What they said:

  • “It’s really good to see them working like this – in a different way to normal.” – Teacher, Grendon Infant School
  • “I can tell that this team has been using their imaginations, because some of the things in their city look like they belong in space!” – Student, Grendon Primary School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
