The Schools: Five Elms

Year 6 students from Five Elms in Dagenham travelled to the heart of London’s business district to spend the day as Investment Managers. The school are new to working with Enabling Enterprise yet are already clear about which Enterprise Skills they are confident using and which they would like to improve on. They are eagerly looking forward to further developing their skills through their Lesson Time Projects.

The Business: UBS – Liverpool Street

UBS is a global bank, providing services in over 50 countries. Specialising in Wealth Management and Global Asset Management they serve ‘ultra high net worth individuals’ all over the world.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

Over the course of the day, pupils had the chance to meet a range of volunteers from across the company, and work with them to improve their teamwork and communication skills. The students became investment companies and were given £20,000 by their clients Mr and Mrs Green to invest in three different companies. In order to select how to invest their money the students had to weigh up the risks and benefits of each company they were presented with.

The Results:

After Listening Carefully to find out as much information as possible about their clients, including their hobbies and interests, the new investment bankers had to use their Problem Solving skills to make some big decisions to make a return on their investment. Many children decided to spread the possible risks by investing some of their money across different companies, while others made high risk decisions and invested the full £20,000 in one company. Once the success of each company had been revealed and the investment bankers reflected on their choices, they shared the outcomes with the UBS judges in a series of professional presentations.

What they said:

  • “What’s been really special about today, is that they’ve learned things they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to at school.’’ – Teacher, Five Elms
  • “I was really impressed with how well they all presented and how quickly they were able to understand the concepts of risk and benefit.’’- Volunteer, UBS
  • “I feel that we learned from our mistakes today and this helped us when deciding how to invest our client’s money.’’ – Student, Five Elms

Thanks to UBS for such a great trip day, and to Five Elms for coming along.
