The School: President Kennedy School

President Kennedy School, in Coventry, is once again providing enterprise education opportunities to their Year 9 students through a variety of lesson time projects and visits out to the workplace with Enabling Enterprise.

The Business: University Hospital Birmingham

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham which is run by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), is recognised as one of the leading hospitals in Europe and has an international reputation for quality of care, informatics/IT, clinical training and research. This was the perfect location for our PKS budding entrepreneurs to aim high with innovative gadgets they were about to design.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

After a warm welcome from Melissa Glynn, Work Experience Coordinator and Tutor at UHB and introductions the UHB volunteers had been made, it was time for the 13- and 14-year olds to question the adults about their jobs and the skills they use every day. Students then had to quickly form new teams to research and design a new piece of technology to support the hospital staff, patients and visitors.

The Results:

The fast-paced challenge culminated in an exciting trade fair where the UHB volunteers watched presentations to decide the ultimate winning team and gadget of the day. Accompanying teacher, Helen Petrak from President Kennedy was impressed with the engagement of all the students throughout and was delighted to see the energy and enthusiasm for the teamwork tasks set. As ideas were shared, problems solved and creative ideas came together, it was clear that it was going to be difficult for the judges to make a final decision.

What they said:

  • “I feel accomplished and proud! Today has been great.” – Student, President Kennedy School
  • “I will definitely volunteer with Enabling Enterprise again. The impact on these students was impressive. They grew in confidence. I really enjoyed their presentations.” – Volunteer, University Hospital Birmingham
  • ” It was a pleasure working with Enabling Enterprise again. The students were a pleasure to work with and they came up with some great ideas, to help improve the running of the hospital, finding solutions to real problems that we face. PKS have some future inventors!” – Volunteer, University Hospital Birmingham

Thanks to University Hospital Birmingham for such a great trip day, and to President Kennedy School for their energy and focus on the challenge.
