The Schools: Priestmead Primary

Priestmead Primary School in Harrow started their Enabling Enterprise experience this year, and students from the school have already taken part in a Greetings Card Challenge Day earlier in the year. For this trip, a group of Year 6 students were specially chosen to hone their enterprise skills in an aspirational professional environment, with the advantage of having experts on hand throughout the day to help them with their challenge.

The Business: DLA Piper, London

DLA Piper is an international law firm with lawyers in the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe and the Middle East. They help companies with their legal needs around the world. Their clients range from multinational companies to charity organisations. They also advise governments and public sector bodies.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

After an introduction to the law and to DLA Piper, the Year 6 students were ready to start their challenge: acting as either the prosecution or defence team for one of our Harry Potter defendants. They had to listen carefully to different evidence and prepare their cases, working as a team to decide what the most compelling arguments would be.

The Results:

Each group did a fantastic job of picking out their main ideas to present in court, using their imagination to think about how the evidence and points from the case notes could be best presented to the Jury to back up their arguments. It was particularly impressive to see how the students used the legal language they had picked up from the volunteers over the course of the day to make their speeches sound even more professional and persuasive.

What they said:

  • “It was great to see them grow in confidence through the day, and their presentations were fantastic” – Teacher, Priestmead Primary School
  • “I wouldn’t have been able to stand and speak so confidently at 11 years old! They’ve done amazingly well!” – Volunteer, DLA Piper
  • “We used our communication skills and listened to everyone’s ideas.” – Student, Priestmead Primary
  • “Today I learnt that lawyers need to stay positive, listening carefully to each other to build a strong case. Thank you DLA Piper for giving us such a wonderful opportunity!” – Student, Priestmead Primary

Thanks to DLA Piper for such a great trip day, and to Priestmead Primary School for coming along.
