On Tuesday students from Cardinal Pole School and Haggerston School traveled down the road from Hackney into the heart of London’s financial centre. 35 pupils from years 9 and 10 were welcomed into UBS, a global financial services firm, and given the opportunity to interview and work alongside volunteers from the company.

Students from the two schools were mixed together and were able to break the ice during the morning’s warm up activities. They soon settled into their teams and the competition started to heat up! After an introduction to UBS and the Careers Carousel, where pupils were able to interview the volunteers, it was time for the day’s main challenge to begin…

Each group was assigned the task of designing and building a bridge using resources allocated to them which could also be traded between teams. It was a valiant effort by all as the students put their blood, sweat and tears into their designs, building with meticulous care and adding their final details up until the last second. In the end it was “Team Excellent” that triumphed – though “Team Dream” managed to turn theirs into quite a fetching scarf! Top marks for versatility!

Well done to all the teams for throwing themselves into the task so enthusiastically and thank you to all the generous volunteers who helped make it such an enjoyable day!
