The Schools: SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School and Oasis Academies Woodview, Boulton and Warndon

SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School in Moseley, Birmingham are a new Enabling Enterprise School, keen to give their students opportunities to visit different work places and use the skills they are developing in their lesson time projects. Oasis Academy Woodview, located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, are a long standing Enabling Enterprise school, who have been keen to share their enterprise success stories with other Oasis Academy schools. So, Oasis Academy Warndon in Worcester and Oasis Academy Boulton in Handsworth, Birmingham, recently joined them for an exciting visit to Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co.’s offices at Snow Hill Birmingham.

The Business: Wragge Lawrence Graham and Co, Birmingham.

Wragge & Co. is a highly respected international law firm, representing a variety of clients from all sectors. The firm’s current clients include, British Airways, Heinz, Aston Martin cars, Cadbury’s, Birds’ Eye, Vodafone, Claire’s Accessories and many more.

The Challenge: Listen Up Lawyers

Following introductions from Laura Charles, CSR Manager, the students set off on an exciting tour of the awe inspiring and stylish offices at Wragge Lawrence Graham and Co. right in the heart of Birmingham city centre. Students grilled lawyers and paralegals to find out more about their jobs in the firm and to get advice on how best to utilise the Enterprise Challenge Skills, ready for the Listen Up Lawyers Challenge. Loaded with top tips and buzzing with ideas, once back in the board room teams needed to start preparing the cases ready to take to trial. Some challenged to be the prosecution, some the defence! But who was in the dock?

The Results:

The students supported each other brilliantly to find out about the accused – Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley! Then they had to take on the role of barristers – acting in three exciting trials. Each team listened carefully to each other’s ideas and asked questions to uncover more about the accused and the crimes. The volunteers from Wragge Lawrence Graham and Co – the jury – listened intently, before deciding on the verdict!

What they said:

  • “The students had the opportunity to work with other children from different schools – developing excellent team work skills. They adopted professional attitudes in this real life working environment. An opportunity our children won’t forget.” – Teacher, Oasis Academy Warndon.
  • “The way the students have grown in confidence throughout the day has really amazed me – they have been imaginative, focussed and determined in their teams. All of the presentations were great – the way they used their literacy skills was super. I have loved working with them. I would certainly offer to support Enabling Enterprise again.” – Volunteer, Wragge Lawrence Graham and Co
  • “This has been a really fun day – I think my team aimed high to do their very best and I would definitely like to do something like this again. I may even be a Barrister when I grow up!” – Student, SS John and Monica Catholic School
  • “There has been a great atmosphere during the day – really positive, great organisation…and the children have made friends too. Just brilliant!” – Teacher, Oasis Academy Boulton.
  • “I love it when we come out on enterprise trips – my team have worked so well together. I feel really proud!” – Student, Oasis Academy Woodview

Thanks to Wragge Lawrence Graham and Co for such a great trip day, and to all the students and staff from SS John and Monica and the Oasis Academies Woodview, Warndon and Boulton for coming along. We really enjoyed working with you.
