The School: Oasis Academy Woodview

Building on their previous Enabling Enterprise successes, the Year 6 students from Oasis Academy Woodview, Birmingham, were keen and eager to get to Morgan Motor Company, in Malvern, for their first business trip of the year. Having completed the ‘Construction Counts’ Lesson-Time Project in school, where the enterprise skills are enthusiastically embedded in all aspects of their curriculum, the students were ready and raring to go.

The Business: Morgan Motor Company, Malvern

As a family-run business, The Morgan Motor Company Ltd. was established in 1909 by H.F.S. Morgan with the design of the Morgan three-wheeler. A four-wheeled model began production in 1936 and Morgan cars have long become famous the world over for their unique blend of charisma, quality materials, superb craftsmanship and high performance. The ethos at Morgan remains unchanged: all their cars are coach built and subjected to continual development in order to meet current standards of safety and to offer the responsive thoroughbred performance with which their name is associated. This is achieved through the dedication and commitment of the hard-working team at Malvern.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

Expert Tour Guide Robert Dance gave the students an extremely informative tour of the site, augmented with a trip to the onsite museum. Using their listening skills and asking questions, the Oasis Woodview students began their crucial market research in a brand new gadget to make life here at the factory that little bit easier! Students then took on the roles of designers, sketching out an annotated prototype. There were a series of board meetings maximising team work within very tight deadlines. The place was thriving with the sound of whirling student brains taking over the noisy car-making sounds!

The Results:

The teams worked brilliantly together, proving that great results can be achieved by sharing ideas and supporting each other to aim high. All teams gave confident presentations of their imaginative ideas. This left Mike, from the Tour Guide Team, and Robert the tricky task of judging which of the enterprising teams impressed them the most. In the end, all students walked away with the pride of the gadget they came up with and the enterprise skills they have developed.

What they said:

  • ‘The students were engaged and on task, as always on the Enabling Enterprise days. They are very fortunate to be able to take time on this project and focus on the skills. It is great here at Morgan to see craftspeople using their hands. Hopefully it will spark their imagination’ – Volunteer, Morgan Motors
  • ‘I have really enjoyed being creative with my team today. It was great to see the cars being made and to think how we can help the people working here. My design would help people move around the factory and keep tours safe. We had to use a lot of imagination and teamwork to get the final product.’ – Student, Oasis Woodview
  • ‘I have really seen a development in the skills of the students at the school as we enter the second year working with Enabling Enterprise. It has been a privilege for them to see the work here at Morgan Motors!’ – Teacher, Oasis Woodview

Thanks to Morgan Motor Company for such a wonderful trip day and to the students and staff from Oasis Academy Woodview for coming along.
