The Schools: Wheelers Lane Primary

Following on from a great Moonbase Challenge Day at the start of the Autumn Term, Wheelers Lane enterprising students were excited to visit Newman University in Bartley Green to learn more about the skills needed by the staff and students and to challenge further their own enterprise skills!

The Business: Newman University, Birmingham

Newman University has a particular focus on education and teaching and is also the home of Enabling Enterprise’s West Midlands office. The visitors from Wheelers enjoyed asking a group of volunteer students about University life and the skills they needed in their studies. They were also able to talk to a member of University staff about his role and were taken on a tour of some of the main lecture rooms and other facilities.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

Challenged with the task of designing gadgets to make the lives of both students and staff at the University easier Wheelers representatives were keen to get to work. They interviewed the volunteers to ask them about problems they experienced and then set to work in teams designing gadgets to overcome these issues. At the end of the day, teams presented their gadgets to the University student panel.

The Results:

The children showed a real interest in the different roles at the University and of the life of students. Working in teams, they enthusiastically set to work designing gadgets. It was noticeable that through some excellent leadership skills, all pupils were engaged in each team which sped the process up and produced some impressive and imaginative results, not just in the product itself but in marketing ideas such as straplines and logos.

What they said:

  • “It was a really well organised day, well supported by University volunteers. I thought it was a great opportunity for our children to develop their enterprise skills but also to see a little University life and think about their own futures and aspirations.” – Teacher, Wheelers Lane
  • “I’ve really enjoyed it and have been surprised by the children’s creativity” – Volunteer, Newman University
  • “It was an amazing chance to work in a team on a fun challenge. I liked meeting and working with the University students” – Student, Wheelers Lane

Thanks to Newman University staff and students for such a great trip, and to the impressive visitors from Wheelers Lane for their enthusiastic engagement with the day.
