The School:

Following an exciting start to Enabling Enterprise Lesson Time Projects and a Challenge Day coming up next term, a selected group of Year 6 students from Fairway Primary visited the bustling Birmingham Bull Ring Markets to find out more about how enterprise skills are used. They were ready and raring to go to be budding market traders.

The Business: Birmingham Bull Ring Markets

Bull Ring Markets, just below the Bullring Shopping Centre, are run by the City Council and have been trading for hundreds of years. They include a wide range of indoor and outdoor market stalls, both semi-permanent, and stalls that can be hired by the day.

The Challenge: Magical Markets

Students were fascinated by talks and a tour around the markets delivered by market managers Becky and Peter. They particularly enjoyed visiting the sweet stall! It gave them great ideas for the challenge that they faced. With visions of thousands of sweets and chocolate swirling in their minds they were ready to devise a business plan for their own market stall – trading exciting sweets from a variety of wholesalers. The teams made sound investments with huge profits being made!

The Results:

Once proposals were in and trading had come to an end the teams were asked to share their ideas with the volunteers to see who would be awarded the title of the winning team. Demonstrating excellent teamwork, pupils came up with designs for their market ‘flash’, floorplans, logos and marketing plans which they presented to markets staff. Becky and ‘chief judge’ Caron deliberated – deciding on the overall winning Market Traders!

What they said:

  • “Children had a super day. We have seen children who are normally quiet taking part and presenting to the others!” – Teacher, Fairway Primary Academy
  • “It has been another fantastic trip with Enabling Enterprise. The children have been focused on the task, talking about and using the skills” – Volunteer, Bull Ring Markets
  • “I have really enjoyed seeing the market and then getting to plan and make my own sweet shop. We made lots of profit because we stayed positive and worked well as a Team. I have had a great day.” – Student, Fairway Academy

Thanks to Becky, Peter and Caron from Bullring Markets for such a great trip day, and to Fairway Primary pupils and staff for coming along.
