The School: Gilbertstone Primary School

Located in South Yardley, Birmingham, Gilbertstone Primary are in their second year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Their past experience in lesson-time projects and business trips mean that students have an understanding on the enterprise skills and great enthusiasm to develop them further. With a particular focus on Leading and Sharing Ideas, the whole school decided to take part in an exciting challenge that would put students’ teamwork and imagination skills to the test. Let’s see how they got on…

The Challenge: Operation Moon Base

A very special assembly set the students on a mission right at the start of the day: to create a new civilisation on a distant moon. Then they had to use their problem-solving skills to decide which crew members to take with them based on their jobs and skills set. Imaginations were needed to design an animal to help the people on the new moonbase, before using cross curricular knowledge and skills to create a dream city for the citizens to live in.

The Results:

Working within tight deadlines, students took on a variety of roles as managers, designers, architects, and builders, to name a few. At the end of the day, teams prepared, rehearsed and gave persuasive presentations to showcase all of their hard work in a bid to win votes for the best ideas. Which Moonbase would their friends and teachers want to travel to?

There was a great buzz generated throughout the day and what was particularly impressive was the way all children engaged with the task with such enthusiasm. Their confident presentations were bursting with descriptive language, humour and persuasion which made the voting a very difficult task.

What they said:

  • “I’m amazed by how they now work so much more effectively in different teams. They are much more democratic when sharing ideas and making decisions. These opportunities are really making a difference. It was interesting to see how their imaginations have come on too.” – Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary
  • “I found it hard compromising on some tasks: but we had to keep everyone happy and also come to the best decision as a group. I’m pleased how my team got on. ” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary

Another great day for students and teachers at Gilbertstone. Well done to everyone who was involved.
