The School: Foresters Primary School

Located in Sutton, Surrey, Foresters Primary are in their third year of working with Enabling Enterprise, running enterprise Challenge Days and lesson-time projects back in school. With a focus on Working in a Team and Problem Solving, a lucky few students from Year 5 travelled all the way to Croydon for a challenge that would put the budding entrepreneurs’ skills to the test.

The Business: Metro Bank, Croydon

Metro Bank is Britain’s first new High Street bank in over 100 years. They offer banking focused on the customer, which suited our students perfectly for today’s challenge. With over 35 stores in London, Metro Bank aims to expand fourfold in the next fifteen years. Let’s see how their volunteers inspired our would-be investment managers to grow their businesses with the same confidence.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

The day started off with a tour of the premises, which introduced our Foresters students to the day-to-day world of retail banking and the special customer-focused approach at Metro Bank. The main focus for this challenge was to develop students’ understanding of risk and benefits. To practise this, they worked in small teams, and put their heads together to tackle questions from ‘The Million Pound Drop’. They made group decisions about where to place their money. Lessons were learnt and students were now armed with some top tips about how to manage risk and invest their money safely.

The Results:

With their understanding of ‘risk, benefits and investment’, the children then had to decide how they would invest £20,000 from their fictional clients Mr and Mrs Green. Their listening skills were put to the test as they researched different businesses who were all keen for their investment. The students quickly learnt that this was not a simple task and involved lots of problem-solving if they wanted to ensure their clients were to make a promising ‘Return on their Investment’. The challenge culminated in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style showdown of high-quality presentations in front of our three Metro Bank judges.

What they said:

  • “I loved the challenge – you could see the children having an amazing time!” – Teacher, Foresters Primary
  • “It’s been a great for the children to meet lots of new people and develop their confidence.” – Volunteer, Metro Bank
  • “The tour was my favourite part of the day and also getting to see inside the vault” – Student, Foresters Primary

Thanks to Metro Bank for such a great first trip day, and to Foresters Primary School for coming along.
