The Schools: Whitehall Junior and Kingsbury Green Primary School

Year 4 and Year 5 students came together from Kingsbury Green Primary in Brent and from Whitehall Junior School in Hillingdon. Having completed Enabling Enterprise lesson-time projects back at school, and both schools having experienced the ‘Business in a Day’ challenge, this was a chance to put their enterprise skills to the test.

The Business: Oliver Wyman

Oliver Wyman is an international management consulting company, helping businesses to solve their biggest challenges. Most recently, this has included the re-branding of Starbucks and McDonald’s. Over the course of today’s challenge, students had the chance to meet a range of volunteers from across the company, and work with them to improve their teamwork and communication skills on a consultancy challenge.

The Challenge: United Jetways Consultancy Challenge

The Year 4 and Year 5 students worked in mixed teams as management consultants to turn around a failing airline “United Jetways”. They had to use their imagination and teamwork skills in order to come up with a marketing strategy and in-flight brochure to attract new customers and increase the airline’s profit.

The Results:

Teams dived into the challenge, starting with the tricky task of picking a target market for a new advertising campaign. Most teams opted for families with a few teams going for the super-rich or students. The students worked really well together and shared their ideas effectively in their teams in order to create a really persuasive slogan and eye-catching poster to attract their target audience. They also aimed high with their clear, confident presentations to the CEO of United Jetways at the end of the day.

What they said:

  • “The choice of venue was an inspiring one and the children instantly stood taller in their presentations as a result. The children enjoyed themselves hugely and it was a very interesting and valuable day overall ” – Teacher, Whitehall Junior School
  • “It was great working with the students and see their enthusiasm for the task. They came together well as a team and I’ll definitely be volunteering again.” – Volunteer, Oliver Wyman
  • “I’m most proud of the presentation we made at the end – we were aiming high and stayed positive!” – Student, Kingsbury Green Primary School

Thanks to Oliver Wyman for such a great trip day, and to Whitehall Junior and Kingsbury Green Primary School for coming along.
