The School: Benthal Primary School

Benthal Primary is a long-standing partner in their third year with Enabling Enterprise. Thanks to their previous experience of the enterprise skills, students are already in a strong position to practise them further, especially after the exciting Challenge Day they had yesterday. Today a lucky few from Years 3 and 4 travelled to the iconic ‘Walkie Talkie’ building in central London for a financial challenge that would stretch those enterprise skills further.

The Business: RSA, London

The Royal Sun Alliance Group has existed in the UK for over 300 years. With head offices in London, they are now the UK’s largest commercial insurance company with a Global Network including over 150 countries. Today volunteers Natalie, Francesca, Erskine, Karoline, Roni, Monika and Hannah were on hand to help students develop their Working in a Team as well as Listening Carefully skills. Let’s see how they got on.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

The Benthal students started off by quizzing the RSA volunteers to find out more about the company and the enterprise skills they use on a daily basis. A fantastic tour of the premises then introduced the students to the many different jobs in the finance and insurance sector. The main focus for this challenge was to develop students’ understanding of investment in order for them to take on the roles of investment managers, and so their teamwork was a crucial part of the decision-making process.

The Results:

With their understanding of ‘risk and investment’, the children then had to decide how they would invest £20,000 from their fictional clients Mr and Mrs Green. Their listening skills were put to the test as they researched different businesses who were all keen for their investment. The students learned that this was not a simple task and involved lots of problem-solving if they wanted to ensure their clients were to make a promising ‘Return on their Investment’.

The challenge culminated in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style showdown of high-quality presentations in front of our RSA judges. By that point, adults in the room had nothing but praise for the students as they were indeed brilliantly Working in a Team and Listening Carefully.

What they said:

  • “This is a good starting point for the kids to build on those enterprise skills as they will be useful later in life.” – Teacher, Benthal Primary
  • “It was so great to see even the much quieter students come out of their shells and perform their presentations in front of everyone at the end of the day – a real confidence boost for them!” – Volunteer, RSA
  • “I want to work for RSA one day!” – Student, Benthal Primary

Thanks to RSA for such a great first trip day, and to Benthal Primary School for coming along.
