The School: William Tyndale

William Tyndale Primary has worked with Enabling Enterprise for three years, meaning these Year 5 students are no strangers to the Challenge Skills. Previously these Year 5s have designed and created their own board games, as well as working on new chocolate designs. Now they are ready to explore the world of construction and how they can apply their skills in an engineering challenge!

The Business: Brookfield Multiplex, London

Brookfield Multiplex is a leading global contractor with expertise across the entire property sector, delivering landmark property and infrastructure assets for more than 50 years. The re-development of Centre Point is one of their current projects, giving a new lease of life to an iconic area of London.

The Challenge: Terrific Towers

The day began with an introduction to the Centre Point site, with Joe from Brookfield Multiplex sharing the CGI mock-ups of what it will look like on completion, to inspire the children in their challenge to design and build a new tower. A tour of the offices and a chance to look out at the team working on the site, gave the children insight into the world of construction and ensured they had a clear understanding of the decisions they need to make to build their tower. Only a couple of hours later the children had a range of towers, with themes from UFOs to those shaped like letters of the alphabet. The final decisions they had to make were how to budget the fit-out of the tower, considering whether to make the space restaurants, offices or homes. A tough decision in the competitive world of real-estate in London!

The Results:

This exciting day with Brookfield Multiplex clearly gave the children insight into the world of construction and its many, complex features. The volunteers from the company came from a range of departments across all aspects of the construction process – from procurement and quantity surveying, to planning and design. The final towers the children created and the way their presented their ideas, demonstrated the level of their understanding – a very impressive day indeed!

What they said:

  • “It was excellent to see the pupils developing within the space of the day.” – Volunteer, Brookfield Multiplex
  • “We have found out about the different jobs people do when they build a tower like Centre Point” – Student, William Tyndale

Thanks to Brookfield Multiplex for such a great trip day, and to William Tyndale Primary for coming along.
