The School: Ardleigh Green Juniors

Y5 students from Ardleigh Green Junior School in Essex spent the day competing in teams in an exciting challenge to complement their topic work on space and the solar system. Having already taken part in the Greetings Card Challenge last year, these students were able to apply their enterprise skills once more and reflect on why they are so important in supporting them to be successful in life.

The Challenge: Operation Moonbase

The Year 5 students were set the challenge of creating a new civilisation on a distant moon. They had to use their problem-solving skills to decide which crew member to take with them based on their jobs and skills set. Teams then had to use their imagination to design an animal to help the people on the moon before creating a dream city for the citizens to live in. At the end of the day, teams wrote, rehearsed and gave persuasive presentations to show off all of their hard work over the day in a bid to win the vote for the best ideas.

The Results:

There was a great buzz generated throughout the day and what was particularly impressive was the way all children engaged with the task with such enthusiasm. Their confident presentations were bursting with descriptive language, humour and persuasion which made the voting a difficult task.

What they said:

  • “It’s been great to see teams being able to resolve their problems independently as they have arisen over the day.” – Teacher, Ardleigh Green Junior School
  • “It’s been the best day of Year 5 so far!” – Student, Ardleigh Green Junior School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
