The School: Brookland Junior & Infant Schools

In their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise, Brookland Junior & Infant Schools in Barnet have kick-started their enterprise programme with some Year 3 students turning “Trash to Treasure” for their first Lesson Time Project of the year. In addition to this, a few lucky students from other classes were selected to take part in a business trip to the top law firm Freshfields last week where they impressed professionals with their entrepreneurial skills. Today the whole school embarked on an exciting challenge that would put their Imagination and Teamwork skills to the test.

The Challenge: Greetings Card Challenge Day

The day started with a very special assembly where the students found out about their challenge for the day: to set up their own card manufacturing companies by designing, making and selling their cards in competition with other teams in their class. The students went back to classrooms ready to take on the challenge knowing which skills they would need as a team in order to be successful in the challenge.

The Results:

During the production line, teams were able to test out different strategies to maximise their potential profits. Working with limited resources and within very tight deadlines, all students collaborated to produce the most amazing themed cards. Next, all teams had to prepare and deliver a persuasive pitch that would convince their peers to vote for their ideas.

The day culminated in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style showdown, followed by the all-important votes from their peers. All teams showed such high standards in the challenge skills that teachers were spoilt for choice when they had to decide who the winners really were.

What they said:

  • “I chose this design because it was quicker to make so I could sell more.” – Year 1 Student, Brookland Infant School
  • “Our friend was really good at leading because she was not bossing us around, she was giving us lots of advice and she was encouraging us to do the best we can do.” – Year 6 Student, Brookland Junior School
  • “Today I’ve seen a lot of Listening Carefully as well as Sharing Ideas, which has helped them a lot as they were making decisions. Also, there was some really good leading from some pupils who confidently helped their team when they were stuck. This is a huge thing for my class, I’m really proud!” – Teacher, Brookland Infant School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
