Year 9 students from Petchey Academy and Knights Academy joined together on Friday the 11th of March, to embark upon an epic maths challenge at UBS. They ventured into the heart of the City to spend a day at one of Liverpool Street’s most prominent investment banks – the perfect place to provide some mathematical inspiration!

The students got the chance to learn more about UBS while they worked on their projects alongside volunteers from the bank. The morning was taken up with a number of warm up activities and group exercises with students and volunteers being split into six teams. It didn’t take long for the competition to start heating up!

The Challenge

Our six teams were then given the brief for the day’s challenge. They were to come up with a unique way of packaging and marketing a new chocolate bar. Their design and business plan had to be based on market research and their maths skills were put to the test as they formulated graphs and worked out how much their expenditure and profits would be.
The presentations which followed were both entertaining and highly persuasive, provoking serious debate between the UBS judges! In the end, it was team C that came out on top with their unique design. Congratulations to them and thank you to all the volunteers who helped make it such an enjoyable day!
