The School: Matchborough First School

‘Aim high and smile’ is the motto of Matchborough First School in Redditch, Worcestershire, a selection of whose Year 3 pupils attended IBM’s Warwick headquarters on Thursday 22nd October to develop those very skills and attitudes.

The Business: IBM Warwick

IBM is one of the most famous information technology companies in the world, which now focuses on generating innovative solutions for business problems far more than on producing hardware. This first event with IBM will help students find out more about different careers in the sector, and also to understand how IT helps to businesses to solve some of their biggest challenges. IBM, a major employer in the West Midlands, thrives on key enterprise skills of its employees including aiming high, staying positive, using imagination and leadership.

The Challenge: Imaginative Inventors

Pupils interviewed IBM volunteers who did a great job of explaining their roles and which enterprise skills they needed. They then enjoyed a tour of the IBM offices, looking especially for which IBM employees might benefit from a new gadget to make their office work easier and more productive. Back in the meeting room, pupils then came up with ideas for these gadgets, aided by the IBM volunteers.

The Results:

Pupils came up with some great ideas. These included the ‘Superchair’ – which resolved several issues raised by employees around drinks and comfort at desks. Another group came up with the ‘I-Opener’ – a device which recognised the iris to open doors automatically when carrying drinks or files. Pupils then had to make a pitch to the volunteers making the case for their idea to get funding to be taken forward.

What they said:

  • “The ‘Think’ slogan inspired children to work together to create imaginative designs and experience enterprise in the real world” – Teacher, Matchborough First School
  • “The session brilliantly catered to the age group. You could see who much they were enjoying it from their smiling faces” – Volunteer, IBM Warwick
  • “I really liked talking to the IBM people about our ideas for gadgets” – Student, Matchborough First School

Thanks to Warwick for such a great trip day, and to Matchborough First School pupils for coming along.
