The Schools: Topcliffe Primary and Reaside Academy

Topcliffe, Castle Vale and Reaside Frankley, have both have been involved in Enabling Enterprise for a number of years. After Lesson Time Project, Challenge Day and Business Trip successes throughout the last year, the schools have entered another academic year ready to embrace and tackle the Challenge Skills head on.

The Business: Carillion plc

Carillion is a multinational facilities management and construction services company headquartered in Wolverhampton. They have a lead role in the development and gentrification of Paradise Circus as it transforms into the new and up-coming Paradise Birmingham. The students were based in the heart of the changes at the Paradise Circus Office, which soon too will be demolished as part of the transformations.

The Challenge: Money Matters

With building and demolition on their minds volunteers shared their experiences, the skills they use daily in their roles at Carillion and supported students through the series of exciting, fast-paced activities that involved making decisions in order to construct their own tower. Following a tour of the 5th floor to witness the local development and skyline of Birmingham the students were geared up and ready use their imagination to create and fit out a tower of their dreams.

The Results:

Each team made of a mixture of students from each school, had lots of fun working together, sharing ideas and problem solving to ensure they had a tower standing by the end of the project. It was particularly pleasing to see students encouraging each other, staying positive when challenges were particularly tricky or time was tight and demonstrating problem solving skills when budgets were tight or towers were not standing upright!

What they said:

  • “It has been a great opportunity for the children to work in teams and experience what it is really like in the real world, they worked well together.” – Volunteer, Carillion
  • “I have really enjoyed working with different people and making new friends. We had to learn how to work as a team and make sure everyone had a role.” – Student, Reaside Academy
  • “I can’t believe we got there in the end and made a tower. I became a leader of our team and made sure we got everything done on time!” – Student, Topcliffee Primary School

Many thanks to the volunteers from Carillion and to the students and staff from Topcliffe and Reaside for their energy and enthusiasm.
