The Schools: St Mary’s and St John’s C of E School and The Winns Primary School

St Mary’s and St John’s, also known as ‘SMSJ’ located in Barnet, are long-standing partners of Enabling Enterprise. They have been working closely with us as an all-through school to support their Business and Enterprise specialism. Their students are experts at applying the Challenge Skills they have been practising in class, in their lesson-time projects, and on previous challenge days. Some of the ‘SMSJ’ students teamed up with younger entrepreneurs from The Winns Primary School in an adjacent auditorium, supporting them to shine out as budding entrepreneurs.

The Winns Primary is a 4-form entry school in their first year of working with Enabling Enterprise. Last week the whole school took part in their first ever Challenge Day to practise their enterprise skills. Today Year 5 students travelled from Walthamstow to collaborate with their newly met SMSJ buddies and further hone these skills. Let’s see how they got on.

The Business: Brewin Dolphin, London

Brewin Dolphin is one of the largest British Investment Management and Financial Planning firms with 39 offices throughout the UK. They were established in the mid-18th century as one of the founding firms of the London Stock Exchange. They have a history of helping private clients, trusts, charities and pension funds to create and preserve wealth. Today, a range of fabulous volunteers were on hand from various departments of the business, giving invaluable insight into their job and making this challenge extra special as part of City Giving Day.

The Challenge: Invest for Success

The students from SMSJ and The Winns worked together in small teams alongside their Brewin Dolphin volunteer. They put their heads together to tackle questions from ‘The Million Pound Drop’ to practise taking risks, just like people do in the real world every day. Some teams saw their risks reap the benefits whilst others unfortunately lost money.

With their understanding of ‘risk, benefits and investment’, the children then had to decide how they would invest £20,000 from their clients Mr and Mrs Green. The students learned that this was not a simple task and involved lots of problem-solving if they wanted to ensure their clients were to make a ‘Return on their Investment’.

The Results:

Teams were engaged in high-quality debates when making decisions for their clients. Some students shone out with their leadership skills, which was noticed by teachers, EE staff and Brewin Dolphin volunteers. At the end of the day, each group presented their investment decisions and outcomes in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style showdown in front of a panel of judges, who were all very impressed with the quality of their public speaking and ability to explain their ideas. It was clear that they had become experts at sharing ideas.

What they said:

  • “Children highly enjoyed the activities, and the day was very well organised. The idea of investment and risk was explained clearly – not an easy task!” – Teacher, The Winns Primary
  • “What a fantastic day! The kids were all on board and I was amazed to see how quickly their teamwork skills developed over the course of the day.” – Volunteer, Brewin Dolphin
  • ” The bit I liked the most was coming up with the best way we could invest the money for Mr and Ms Green. We used everyone’s ideas in the team and we made the safest decision” – Student, St Mary’s and St John’s

Thanks to Brewin Dolphin for such a fantastic trip day, and to St Mary’s and St John’s C of E School and The Winns Primary School for coming along.
