The School: Gilbertstone Primary School

Gilbertstone Primary from Yardley, in South Birmingham, are an Enabling Enterprise Partner School approaching their second year of engagement with great enthusiasm. After Lesson Time Project, Challenge Day and Business Trip successes last year, the school have made it a priority to embed the challenge skills developed through their exciting enterprise programme into their whole school curriculum.

The Business: Ashram Housing Association

Ashram is a West Midlands housing association that provides community-inspired housing and services. The association delivers high quality housing and support services, including financial and employment advice to customers, residents and service users across Birmingham and Coventry.

The Challenge: Money Matters

Volunteers shared their experiences, the skills they use daily in their roles at Ashram and supported students through the series of exciting, fast-paced activities that mimic the processes of how financial decisions are made. By developing an understanding of “risk” students were able to make decisions about investments when setting up their own small business.

The Results:

Each team, supported by a volunteer had lots of fun working together, sharing ideas and aiming high to do the best job they could. It was particularly pleasing to see students encouraging each other, staying positive when challenges were particularly tricky or time was tight and demonstrating an understanding of the importance of making careful financial decisions.

What they said:

  • “This has been such a great opportunity for the children – they have grown in confidence and their presentations have been really impressive today.” – Volunteer, Ashram Housing Association
  • “It has been great to see how the day has encouraged our more reluctant pupils to gain confidence in speaking out and sharing ideas.” – Teacher, Gilbertstone Primary School
  • “We tried really hard to stay positive and didn’t give up. Next time we will listen carefully to make sure we don’t miss ideas from our team that are even better.” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School
  • “I can’t wait to go back to school and ask my teacher if I can set up my own business in school!” – Student, Gilbertstone Primary School

Many thanks to the volunteers from Ashram and to the students and staff from Gilbertstone for their energy and enthusiasm.
