The School: Heartlands Academy

Heartlands Academy have worked with Enabling Enterprise for 3 years and the Year 10 Enrichment Group of Enterprise Ambassadors have recently completed their Big Business Challenge which saw them successfully project manage their own whole school Summer Fete, utilising the many skills they have developed through their enterprise project work.

The Business: PwC, Birmingham

PricewaterhouseCoopers is the world’s second largest professional services firm, providing advice and support for businesses in anything from taxes to dealing with climate change. They have a wide range of clients, including, Debenhams, Tesco, Samsung, Sony and Barclays. They have over the recent years also been the certifier of votes for the Oscars!

The Challenge: Money Matters

Initial introductions and a welcome from Paul Carter, Senior Manager Assurance at PwC, and the opportunity to find out about various roles at PwC from the strong team of volunteers set the scene for a great day. Then, after a chance for the students to share their enterprise successes of late, the challenge was revealed. Supported by the volunteers, the students were able to explore the role of risk and benefit in finance and then apply decision making skills to make the best choices to support the creation of their own new business. Applying their Maths skills, using their imaginations and problem solving came to the fore in a fast paced challenge which left everyone with smiles on their faces!

The Results:

The group of 15 year olds impressed the volunteers with their willingness to take on board ideas, share ideas and develop ideas – leading to some really creative new business suggestions with great USP’s. The students showed maturity in reflecting on the skills they had needed to complete the challenge and everyone walked away proud of their progress and achievement over the day.

What they said:

  • “I liked the referral to employability skills throughout the day. The students really understood that these skills – working in a team, solving problems, listening carefully and sharing ideas etc are going to be vitally important to them in their future careers.” Volunteer, PwC.
  • “I was so nervous before our presentation – really nervous! Now, I am proud of myself and my team. I think we showed we had great business ideas and I actually liked it when we were asked questions about our ideas. It was a challenge.” Student, Heartlands Academy.
  • “I have gained in confidence throughout the day. I have really enjoyed the challenge and working with the volunteers from PwC was great. They shared their expertise!” Student, Heartlands Academy.

Thanks to PwC for such great support, and to the students and staff from Heartlands Academy for coming along and working with such enthusiasm.
