The School: Montpelier Primary School, Ealing Broadway

In school, the children have been working on their projects in class, such as creating a radio podcast, as well as putting their Challenge Skills into practice on their ‘Day in Politics’ Challenge Day. Today, the children attending were school council members from across Years 4 to 6.

The Business: Westfield, White City

Employing over 400 people in the UK, this was the first Enabling Enterprise visit to Westfield – who are responsible for two of the biggest shopping centres in Europe. The White City centre alone has over 650 retailers and food outlets, between them employing over 7000 people. During their challenge, the children were lucky to be joined by senior employees from across a range of different departments including HR, building services and retail relations.

The Challenge: Team Players

Reflecting Westfield’s core value of ‘collaboration’, team-work was the key focus of the day as teams worked together to research, design and create new business cards for their Westfield volunteers. As children worked in mixed age group teams, they quickly had to learn to support each other’s ideas and include all their team members if they were going to succeed.

The Results:

Through interviewing various volunteers throughout the day and extensive tours to supplement their research, children learnt a lot about the work ‘behind the scenes’ at Westfield and the wide range of careers involved in retail. Teams also showed fantastic progress in their teamwork, as they quickly learnt that by sharing and combining their ideas, they were able to produce even more creative work.

What they said:

  • “The theme of teamwork flowing through the day worked really well at tying all the different activities together.” – Volunteer, Westfield
  • “These really are skills that children will need to be valuable members of society in the future.” – Parent, Montpelier Primary School
  • “My recommendation for teamwork is aiming high, as you need to have goals.” – Student, Montpelier Primary School
  • “The strong emphasis on teamwork has been really effective.” – Teaching Assistant, Montpelier Primary School
