The School: Kender Primary

Students from Year 4 and 5 at Kender Primary school in Lewisham spent a Day in Politics during the lead up to the 2015 General Election. It gave students the opportunity to apply the enterprise skills they had developed during their Enabling Enterprise lesson time projects. These skills include leading, team work and listening carefully. Students in Year 5 completed three lesson time projects last year and Year 4 have so far completed Brilliant Books, promoting reading in their school, and Number Crunching, designing brand new chocolate brands based on market research.

The Challenge: A Day in Politics

Students in Years 4 and 5 were set the challenge of designing the political party of the future. Looking at aspects of society that might need government support or funding, the students identified the social groups that they would most like to allocate spending to. At the end of the day the students held an election of their own to decide which party would represent their class in a later school wide election.

The Results:

The students set themselves ambitious targets of how they would help their constituents. They worked really well together in their teams and stayed positive when hard decisions had to be made. By preparing good presentations each team made sure they had a strong chance of winning the election and did a great job of sharing their ideas.

What they said:

  • “They did really well at working in teams today, they are also much better at staying positive.” – Teacher, Kender Primary School
  • “You should vote for us because we worked together and try our best to help the world.” – Student, Kender Primary School

Well done to everyone who was involved.
